All ages, all levels.
Once registration closes, we will set up the divisions based on participation (age and rank) and we will share the scheduled starting times for each division. If you have additional questions, please see your instructor.
Volunteers Needed:
We need parents and students to help with the tournament, Taking Pictures, help students by holding their breaking boards, getting their helmets and gloves on before matches, change belts, run scoreboards, etc. Volunteers will meet at 8 am and tournament will start promptly at 9 am. If you are able to volunteer please select "Yes" on the form below. You may help for an hour, two, or the duration of the event. Thank you!
Tournament Rules:
Board Breaking and Kata (forms) will be judged based on technique, difficulty level, power, focus, effectiveness, and martial spirit.
Scores will range from 6.8 to 7.4.
There will be three judges, each giving a score.
In the case of a Tie for First, Second, or Third place, then competitors will be asked to do a tie breaker performance.
(Kata is only available for Intermediate and advanced students)
Sparring (Kumite):
No point limit. If there is a difference of 8 points, the match is over.
Punches to the body with light contact and unblocked punches near the face or head score ONE point.
Kicks to the body score TWO Points (Strikes to the shoulders and arms do not score).
Unblocked Kicks near the face or head score THREE points.
Valid strikes with an opponent on the ground score THREE points.
The competitor who first scores an unopposed point gets the "advantage" - Senshu. In the event that the match ends up in a tie, the competitor with Senshu wins the match. If the match ends with a 0-0 score, the judges will decide the winner based on performance.
PENALTIES: Competitors will be penalized for the following:
ANY Contact to the Head or face
Excessive contact (even to a valid scoring area)
Kicks or punches below the belt.
Uncontrolled techniques
Avoiding to engage the opponent (running away)
Putting yourself in danger (turning away, ducking, etc.)
Exiting the competition area.
Grabbing and/or holding the opponent for more than one second without executing a takedown or other valid technique.
Unsportsmanlike conduct (talking to opponent or judges, complaining, or behaving in any unbecoming manner.)
There are 4 penalty levels:
Warning: Chikoku
Penalty 1 - Keikoku
Penalty 2 - Hansoku Chui
Penalty 3 - Hansoku (Disqualification)
In the last 15 seconds of the match, a competitor who is deemed to be avoiding to engage or exits the competition area on purpose will be penalized with Hansoku Chui immediately (Penalty 2), skipping all prior levels.
Contact techniques: Even light contact to the face or head will be penalized. Penalties will be assessed in order each time there's contact. However, IF the Techniques is deemed to be excessive contact, the competitor may be penalized at any level including disqualification even if no prior penalty had been assessed.
All matches will be 60 seconds stop time. Meaning the match will be stopped any time there is a score or penalty.
The tournament will be SINGLE ELIMINATION.
Awards will be given for First, Second, and Third Place.
The tournament is open to observe for all Families and Friends of our Students. We encourage everyone to cheer loudly for all competitors. Please avoid shouting directions to the competitors, they will be assigned a coach. If you wish to coach your competitor, please let us know. We'd like the competitor to get directions from only one person. Be supportive and win or lose, please encourage everyone to do their best. We look forward to a fun and rewarding experience.
